Born to sauna, 2014
There are many beliefs and myths around the sauna, close at heart for every Finn. But what really happens in the heat? The photographic series Born to sauna are black and white portraits photographed at the traditional village sauna in Fiskars, South Finland in 2012. The 44 portrait pairs shows everyday sauna bathers before and after sauna bathing. The images have been produced using a so called black filter on an analogue camera, making the black and white film capture type A ultraviolet wavelengths not normally visible to the human eye.
Sade Kahra’s debut photography book Born to sauna was released on Saturday 24 May 2014. The 20x20cm book contains nearly one hundred photographs in 124 pages including an essay on by cultural anthropologist and freelance writer Janne Rantala. The essay is written in Finnish and translated into Swedish. The book is self published with the support from the Arts Promotion Centre and the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland. The book is available online (Adlibris, Booky, Prisma), by direct order and in a selection of stores in Finland and Sweden. A selection of the Born to sauna portraits have been exhibited at Fiskars summer exhibition in 2015, at Gallery 67 in Stockholm 2017 and at the VB Photographic Centre in Kuopio 2021 and other venues since 2014.
