Tribe me, 2017
Globalism has homogenised the Western world and brought upon a search for the locally anchored, the ethnic and original, all
interpreted in different ways. The title Tribe Me refers to this search for the exotic as well as our need to be culturally challenged. The ethnic colours and shapes reminds us of something primal we may have lost. But who are really the exotic ones as we look at these images of africanised Nordic and playful Finnish people? Is exoticising ourselves the new tribe?
The works are part of a larger series containing over one hundred portraits photographed with a so-called black filter on traditional black and white film. Some of the portraits were taken during a residency at WAAW in Senegal, part have been photographed at events in Finland. Selections of the series have been shown at Homing Pigeon, a travelling exhibition curated by Ville Laaksonen and Tio Griffith in 2016, and in Ultimate Impact, a large thematic exhibition at The Round Tower in Copenhagen curated by Tina Midtgaard in 2017.
